If you have any questions for me, I’m reading your comments here, on my FB page and I’m also checking #askalexandra on Instagram & Twitter. I do my best to reply as much as I can, so definitely share with me your thoughts and questions.

Onto today’s topic about food control. I won’t be talking about pills, and other craziness like that, but give you some ideas that are free, and that have worked wonders for me and I know will make a difference for you too.

So let’s dive right into it.

The amount of energy that we take in and the amount of energy that we expend, are the factors determining our body weight. You know that.
How is energy measured? In calories.

To maintain weight, we need to take in the same amount of calories that we burn each day. Easy to understand. The human body requires energy to remain alive. So please, never underestimate the amount of calories you actually need to keep healthy. That number of calories that you should eat each day depends on several factors, like sex, age, height, level of activity, and overall general health. You can find lots of online calculators that can help you better define that number, just make sure that it’s coming from a reliable source. Getyourasssuperskinnygurl.com might not be the most dependable place. You know what I’m saying?

Liquid diets, and other nonsense like that is pretty much bulls**t.

A) It’s unhealthy.

B) You’ll gain that weight back as soon as you’re done.

What you need to do is have a little patience, and do it right so you can keep that unwanted weight off, for good. Unfortunately I’m a foodie. Like most of us. I'm a fan of Extra bacon, double cheese, And friedy fried fried. And I don’t just crave salty foods, I crave the sweet stuff just as much. Double-doomed.

But I’ve lived a lifestyle that incorporates the following food control tips, and I’ve been able to maintain a healthy weight while still getting to indulge.

So here’s tip #1:

Get a doggie bag for half of your meal.

Here’s the thing. If it’s on our plate, we’re probably gonna eat it. There’s no control for me, I’m seriously an animal. If there’s something I love to eat on that plate, I will chow it down like beast. Not cute at all! So to avoid that, when I order food that is higher in calories, like a burger & fries, or extra saucy pasta, what I do after I order it,
is I ask the server to place half on the plate, and half in a doggie bag. I’ll only eat what’s on my plate, and then the rest for dinner or lunch the next day. So I won’t have 1,000 calories for lunch and another 500 for dinner whatever I’m going to eat. I’ll have 500 for lunch, and 500 for dinner. Awesome!

Tip #2:

Instead of storing the leftovers in 1 big container, break that down into 2 or 3 little ones. You can more easily control how much you eat, plus you won’t have to heat up the whole thing only to eat half.

Tip #3 is another restaurant related tip.and that is, to order off the lunch menu at dinnertime.

Lunch menus typically have smaller portions than the big, chunky, dinner plates.

Tip#4

Try to avoid going places where you know you’ll be tempted to make poor choices.

And if you can’t, like say… You have to go to the fair, plan your surroundings and meals for the day of, and the day after going to the place you know you’ll be pigging out. For example, every Year I go to the fair. And I don't just go to one, I do 3 in 3 different cities. When I go, I know I’ll be eating 3,000 calories. So I make sure that I eat very light before hand. I also make sure that I will not be going out the next day, and I will make sure I watch over what I eat for the remainder of the week.

And Remember this: there’s no point in beating ourselves down for having a bad diet day. It takes about THREE continuous days of overeating (which is at least 20% more calories than what you need to maintain weight) to start storing extra fat. One bad day out of the entire week is no biggie.

Tip#5

When you’re at home, use smaller dishes.

There is a proven link between our perceived size of food and the deriving appetite, so try eating from the smaller plates and bowls rather than the big ones. Also,
pay close attention to what you're eating when we’re like this, mindlessly watching TV, we’re bound to eat more.

Tip #6

When you eat your meals, eat slowly, and put the fork down between bites.

We usually tend to eat more when we eat faster and by the time we hear our body trying to tell us we’re full, we already porked up on more than our bodies needed.

Tip#7

If you’re like me…hungry all the time, there are some healthy tips that can temporarily offset the hunger.

1. Drink more water. The most common cause of hunger is actually dehydration. So drink a large glass, wait about 10 minutes,
and then see if you’re still hungry.

2. Eat foods that are rich in fiber. Fiber will help keep you feeling fuller longer and is very effective at stabilizing blood sugar levels.

3. Curb hunger with healthy fats, and snack on things like nuts, almonds and walnuts. They are great at giving you that sensation of fullness.

At the end of the day, we are in control of the amount of food we consume each day. And simply deciding to cut one bad item from our diet can make a huge difference on the long haul. For example, substituting your soda for a glass of sparkling water, can save around 150 calories. Skipping the large glass of sweetened iced tea will also save you about 200 calories. You see what I’m saying?

I also want to leave you with this, and I know it will sound like a broken record, but please listen: Stress is a huge trigger for cravings. Learning to deal with stress will not only improve your state of mind and well being, it can potentially save you hundreds of calories a day. Try deep breathing or visualization. I have this app on my phone called Bloom, and it sends me daily reminders to stop for one second and enjoy a tall glass of water, or take a minute for a visual tropical vacation, which is so relaxing. Small things like this can make a huge difference.
